Representative Uecker announces passage of State Transportation
Budget Batavia, Ohio, (March 7, 2009): State Representative Joe Uecker (R-Miami Township) announced this week’s passage of House Bill 2, the state’s two-year transportation budget.
Passing the House with a vote of 53-45 Wednesday evening after a long and often tense session, this bill appropriates $9.6 billion over the next two years for several agencies. The three main agencies are the Department of Transportation (ODOT), the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS), and the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC). These agencies combined account for approximately $6.5 billion.
Representative Uecker voted not to approve the spending bill. “As I said in comments on the House floor to my colleagues, this bill and the many tax increases it imposes will kill jobs in Ohio. I begged my democratic counterparts, to no avail, to fully examine the ramification of this bill” Uecker explained. Uecker went on to say that “during this growing recession, now is not the time to increase taxes and spending”.
Fee and tax increases were not the only objectionable concerns to Rep. Uecker. “Several items in this bill will work to further erode individual civil liberties in Ohio and will further expand government’s intrusion into our lives. I simply cannot endorse these actions and am appalled that other representatives favor this” Uecker admonished.
